Food Revolution Day 2014

It’s Food Revolution Day today – a global day of change to get everyone cooking good food from scratch. It’s also about  being aware of how what we eat and how we prepare it  affects our health and well being.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Jamie Oliver. He’s big hearted, multi talented and passionate about food. He’s an eating inspiration and the website is full of good ideas, useful information and some super delicious recipes.

I whipped up the Veggie Chilli  earlier this week. So spicy but nicey! It tasted as colourful as it looked!

Jamie’s big on getting kids excited about and nurturing a love of food that will last a lifetime! I’m so lucky, my mum, my nana and my auntie all shared their love of food and cooking  with me from a very early age and I have grown up loving food. Is there such a thing as loving food too  much?

I love food. I love to cook it. I love to eat it. I love to share it. However, after my cancer experience I’ve been acutely aware of the link between what I eat and how healthy I am. I can’t turn back the clock and un-eat what I consumed for the last forty years but I can eat for a better future.

Food wise, David and I have really cleaned up our act and are eating fresher and better than ever before. Almost everything we eat is prepared from scratch and I love that I know almost everything in what we eat. (Control freak, me?) We eat a lot less sugar, a lot less gluten and a lot less meat but we’re not perfect by any stretch of the imagination.

This year we won’t be enjoying a food revolution but more of a food revamp. I want to make a concerted effort to go to the farmers’ markets  because nothing beats buying local. I want to buy more organic produce and products (where budget permits) and I want to continue on my quest for finding some more gorgeous gluten free recipes. Swapping brown rice for white would be winning too!

I don’t have the time or energy to implement everything at once, but I do intend to take one step at a time, until my baby steps turn into happy, healthy lifelong habits.
